Road Trip ‘05 – Day 2

Well, I have to give credit where credit is due — Emily did an awesome job planning this trip, as was evident in the cool places we got to see today. The day started smoothly considering our plentiful 5 hours of sleep. We packed the car and said goodbye to Macon, GA. Our first stop of the day was Cartersville, GA, to see the world’s first outdoor Coca-Cola sign. As I am sure you expected, the sign was very well documented on camera. We posted a couple of pictures here for you to see. After bombarding the wall with shutter clicks we decided to explore the town of Cartersville. It was a quaint city and we enjoyed exploring. After about an hour of exploration we decided to hit the road once again on our way to Rock City.

On the way to Rock City we decided to consult the Road Food book (Buy Road Food at Amazon) that Patrick and Carol Lee Griffin so lovingly equipped us with before we left. We discovered a restaurant in Chattanooga called Zarzour’s. It sounded like a fun place to check out so we made our way there. What the book failed to mention is that Zarzour’s was in “the projects” of Chattanooga, so as I am sure you can agree, we fit right in! Getting past the bars on the windows we noticed that everyone coming in and out was dressed in business attire so we felt a little more at ease. I will let Emily explain the dining experience, but it was well worth the trip!

After lunch we made our way to See Rock City! The ride was pretty uneventful until we hit the base of the road that took us to Rock City. Those of you who know me know that my stomach is rock solid; I rarely get sick in the car, but believe it or not the trip to the top was not my favorite stretch of road in this great country of ours. When we arrived at the top we decided to hike throughout the rock formations. It was really cool to see! There is a trail through the rocks, and you end up walking through some very tight spots. You can see Fat Man’s Squeeze in the picture to the left!

After exploring the rest of Rock City we decided to make our way to Nashville, TN, to have some dinner at another restaurant in the Road Food book, the Loveless Cafe. Well, you would think that this place would be easy to find, being that we had a book review on it, five maps on the area, and a GPS system in the car, but finding this place was like finding a leftover beer at a Packer tailgate. But eventually we did find it and it was a great restaurant! Emily did a food review on this place as well!

We left the Loveless Cafe just in time to catch what seemed to be a mass exodus out of every bingo gathering in Tennessee onto the freeway. There was so much blue hair on the road I thought I had driven into the ocean. We did, however, make our way to Louisville where we retired for the evening. All in all a pretty fantastic day in America! Stay tuned for tomorrow!
