Disney Wonder – Day 3 – Castaway Cay

Disney Cruise - Day 03-02As we awoke to our human alarm clock, the cruise ship was making it’s final crawl to Disney’s private island Castaway Cay. We were all very excited about this stop because everyone I had talked to, including Emily, said it is one of the most beautiful places around. They all could not have been more correct. As we approached the dock you could see the Flying Dutchman, the ship from the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, parked in the water for all to see. As Hunter and I took in the views of the ship he asked “Is it scary?” To which I responded, “Of course not!” but I couldn’t blame him for thinking it!

After we completed the getting ready regimen we headed to the Parrot Cay restaurant and had another good buffet breakfast. Hunter managed to get someDisney Cruise - Day 03-16 food in his system as well which is always a crap shoot. The Stevensons joined us for the final stretch of our breakfast as we made our plans to enjoy the island.

Our tummies were well fed so we headed back to the room to change into our suits, gather up the beach gear, and head out to the island. Hunter was styling in his Nemo surf suit which gathered quite a few comments from other guests and staff throughout the day. Emily, Hunter, and I decided our first stop would be the bike rentals so we could explore as much of the island as we could. It was also a good getaway from the crowds that were on the ship. It ended up being a great bike ride as the scenery was beautiful and the lookout tower at the end provided for some great views. As we were leaving the lookout tower, I glanced back at Hunter in the child seat of Emily’s bike, and he was playing the head bob game. With Disney Cruise - Day 03-32all there was to do he of course was off his schedule so he thought what better place to sleep than on the back of the bike. We decided to do a couple laps to see if he could get a little sleep before we hit the beach.

As we were running out of undiscovered trails Hunter sprang to action once again so we headed back, turned in our bikes, and headed to the beach. When we arrived Hunter was ready to get out his new dump truck and shovel and start digging. We headed down to the water and spent a good hour enjoying the sights, sounds and the refreshing water. Hunter tested out some of his new swimming lesson moves as he ventured out into the water with more comfort than he has ever had. While we were playing in the water, none other than Captain Jack Sparrow came staggering down the beach taunting all the little sunbathers as he went. He took a liking to Hunter but the same could not be said in reverse. Hunter crawled up the front of Emily while emphatically repeating, “NO! NO!” I guess he is not that into the whole pirate scene yet. As the other kids got their pictures with the Captain, Hunter got a little braver and enjoyed watching him from a distance.Disney Cruise - Day 03-43

After we were sure Cpt. Jack had gone back to his ghost ship, we splashed around some more and built up quite a hunger. We thought it would be a great time to break and head over to the barbecue that was set up on the island. The food and scenery (not the fat people, the island) were awesome. After we finished our lunch it was back to the beach for a bit more play.

As the afternoon went on we explored a bit more and ended up at this awesome bar called the Head’s Up Bar and enjoyed a drink with the Stevensons as we took in the breathtaking views. The afternoon could not have been nicer. After we were well hydrated we grabbed our stuff and headed back to the ship.

We got back aboard the ship around 3:00 which was the perfect time for Hunter to take a snooze. This hDisney Cruise - Day 03-58e did and did not move until around 5:45 which happened to be our dinner time. During the nap, I went to get us drinks and when I returned, I noticed there was a letter stuck in the light outside our room. I opened this letter and it was an invitation from the Entertainment Manager on the ship to meet at Studio Sea at 9:45 for a special character meeting before their finale parade. We believed this was the result of Goofy requesting our room number the day before. We were all very excited to see what was in store.

We met up with the Stevensons for our final dinner together at Triton’s restaurant. The food was very good as we reminisced about all of the great things that we did during the course of the previous days. Lily was once again enjoying the Flounder’s Nursery so JenDisney Cruise - Day 03-80 and Danny could enjoy a semi quiet dinner with the Hayes family (Hunter partially cooperated).

After we finished our meals and desserts it was time to hit the decks for one last photo shoot in our nice clothes. We explored what had become my favorite deck, deck 4, as it allowed you to walk around the entire ship. It was also cool because all of the brightly colored yellow life boats hung above your head as you traveled. We captured some great photos as the sun was setting.

Of course, it would not be a vacation if Emily didn’t get a chance to shop. What is interesting about the ship is that the stores are only open when the ship is at sea. On the three day cruise there was not a great deal of time when we were awake and sailing. Lucky for Emily this final night provided her that opportunity. We got a few Cruise Line merchandise items and headed back to the room. It was getting to be close to 9:45 so we gathered up the cameras and headed to Studio Sea.

As we arrived about 5 minutes early we were not quite sure what to make of it because the room was completely empty. A nice lady greeted us and took our invitation and brought us in. We sat for a few minutes and were joined by another group of about six people. A few minutes later, Mickey Mouse magically appeared in his sailor attire. Hunter and this other little girl were the ONLY children in the room. Hunter was loving every minute of it. He was having a brief dialogue and autograph session with Mickey, telling him, “I like your new shoes, Mickey. I like your new hat!” when Goofy arrived. It wasn’t three minutes later and ALL of the Characters from the around the ship and from the Disney Dreams show poured into Studio Sea. There must have been 20 or so characters in there by the end. Hunter didn’t even know where to look! Hunter was beside himself as all of his friends and heroes from the movies joined him for the awesome semi-private meet-n-greet. It was truly awesome the attention that he was given but all the Characters. We have to thank Goofy for making all of this Disney Cruise - Day 03-88happen for us. There were a few adults, but Hunter and the other little girl were the ONLY kids in there the entire time! How awesome!

After this awesome experience we made our way back to the room with huge smiles. You could feel the boat begin to sway more than it had during the previous days so we thought it best to head back to the room. We got back to the room, put our pajamas on talked about our awesome day. As we looked out our window you could see lightning far in the distance. I took this opportunity to grab the camera and see if I could get some cool lightning shots.

The night would not have been complete without one more cheese plate. Oh… and throw in two more desserts while you are at it. We enjoyed the room service and conversation as we wrapped up our fun filled vacation. What a great day it was!

Disney Wonder – Day 2 – Nassau, Bahamas

Disney Cruise - Day 02-05As with most of our vacations with Hunter, we found ourselves awakened by our personal rooster before the sun had a chance to rear its head. But this time around, Emily and I had already resigned ourselves to the schedule that is Hunter-driven! We all got showered and dressed, then made our way to the Beach Blanket Buffet, grabbed some breakfast, and headed out to the back deck to watch the ship approach Nassau. The food was OK, but my lack of taste buds I believe was a side effect of the motion sickness patch that I had on for the past 30 hours. The scenery could not be beat, however, as we took in the comfortable ocean breeze.

Emily and I had agreed prior to the trip that we would take this day to explore the ship and take Hunter swimming on the boat. There were some excursions on the island but, being that I don’t have any hair to braid, we thought it would be much more enjoyable to relax on the amazing ship.

We got our suits on and headed down to the Mickey pool area where there was a small pool for children as well as a little splash area for the really youngDisney Cruise - Day 02-29 ones. Hunter loved every minute of the experience. He had fun showing off his new “swimming” skills from the class Emily took him to the last two weeks at the YMCA. The water was 83 degrees and felt like you could have cooked pasta in it. Not as refreshing as I had hoped, but the fact that Hunter loved it made it OK. After finding out we maybe were not supposed to be in the one pool (no swim diapers, even in the kiddie pool? WTF?), we went back to the splash zone, where the nursery staff had a bunch of water toys out for the kids to play with. There definitely were plenty of activities for all age groups well thought out by the staff.

Disney Cruise - Day 02-23After swimming we grabbed some mediocre pizza from Pinocchio’s Pizzeria. We ate a few slices and saved room for snacks later in the afternoon. We timed our events so Hunter could meet Goofy poolside. We patiently waited with our cameras and autograph books for Goofy to arrive. When he hit the scene in his beach attire Hunter’s face just lit up. We waited our turn and Hunter approached Goofy and began his meet-n-greet routine of hug, kiss the nose, autograph, hug and good bye with a few extras for his favorite. Goofy seemed to really be enjoying Hunter as he motioned to the Character Attendant as if to tell her to write something down. The Attendant came over to us and asked our room number. We weren’t exactly sure what was happening but Goofy seemed pretty harmless so we obliged.

After our full afternoon of activities we headed back to the room so Hunter could lie down and take a nap. He slept like a rock and Emily and I relaxed as well and read our books. After a solid two hour nap we got Hunter up and ready for the 3:15 showing of Disney/Pixar’s Up which we had not seen previously. This was Hunter’s first movie in a movie theater, so we were excited (especially since it was free and we could leave if there was a meltdown). The movie was good and Hunter was great through all but about 5 minutes of the movie when he decided he was done sitting still. We’re still Toy Story loyalists, though, if we’re being honest about how this movie compares.

After the movie finished it was almost time for our Palo dinner reservation with the Stevensons. Because Palo is a no-kids, fine-dining establishment, we had set up time at Flounder’s Nursery for both Lily and Hunter to play in this really cool toy room. After we dropped them off they seemed to be very excited to explore all of they new toy options.Disney Cruise - Day 02-35

We got dressed up and arrived at Palo at around 6:00 p.m. As we were escorted to our table we walked past a pretty elaborate camera crew set up to tape the Extreme Makeover Home Edition family having their dinner. Although their vacation looks relaxing on film I believe the actual vacations for these families are anything but relaxing.

We enjoyed the delicious food and amazing service at Palo as we also enjoyed the quiet of no kids. Our server’s name was Oliver from Australia who really made the experience what it was. He barely batted an eye when Emily and Jen peppered him with questions about just how many things they could get away with ordering.

Periodically throughout the evening, we speculated which of us would receive the dreaded nursery staff page, as we knew the odds were stacked against us. Hunter has only been in the care of a non relative maybe two other times in his life! Sure enough, as we were awaiting our entrees, I heard a foreign noise coming from what could only have been my pocket. What was the sound you might ask? It was the ever so convenient pager that we were supplied with in the event that Hunter did not enjoy his experience at Disney Cruise - Day 02-43the Nursery. Since we were already expecting it, we were actually kind of relieved when he lasted longer than we both thought he might! The message cracked both of us up as it read “Hunter Hayes is very upset but we are working on making him happy. Thank you”. Maybe it was funnier after a couple beers, but we all chuckled. My sensitive wife Emily’s first reaction was not one of concern, as you might expect, but, “Ooh, hold still, we have to take a picture of that pager!” Five minutes after the first page we were met with a second informing us to come and pick him up, which we did.

Thanks to Oliver, he had the three desserts that we ordered sent back to the room, so Hunter, Emily and I went back to devour the delicious treats that awaited us. After we couldn’t eat anymore it was time for the Toy Story the Musical show at the Walt Disney Theater. We watched the show and Hunter again impressed us with his ability to sit still and take in the show. After it was over you could tell Hunter would have been willing to sleep in a garbage truck he was so tired (actually with his love of garbage trucks he might prefer it to his bed!) We headed back to the room, got our pajamas on and put Hunter to bed. Emily and her love of cheese plates after 10 p.m. decided we could not go to bed without eating more food, which we did. (Emily here… I cannot turn down “free” room service! Genius!) The cheese plate was good and was a perfect ending to a really fun day. As we were enjoying our food the ship was making its way to the private Disney island, Castaway Cay. More adventures would surely await us on Day Three!

Disney Wonder – Day 1 – Depart Port Canaveral

Disney Cruise - Day 01-04Today, we excitedly departed our house in Orlando and made the 40 minute drive to Cape Canaveral to board Hunter’s and my first cruise. As we made our way to the Cape we commented on how lucky we were to live so close to the port to take advantage of vacation deals when they arise.

Hunter had been prepped over the previous two weeks and was well aware that we were headed to “Mickey’s Cruise Ship Boat.” I was prepared with the motion sickness patch firmly implanted behind my ear because I am such a wuss. Emily, as always, had the entire house prepared, as our bags were packed and ready to go about 15 minutes after we completed our payment two weeks prior. We were all excited because Emily, having traveled on two previous Disney cruises, informed us that we were both in for a real treat.

We completed the 40 minute drive and upon approaching the Cape we could see the giant Disney Cruise Line smoke stacks across the water. We pulled up, dropped our bags, parked the car and headed to check in. The entire check in process could not have gone smoother. Hunter got to meet Captain Mickey pre-boarding and life was good.Disney Cruise - Day 01-19

We boarded the ship just before noon and decided we should grab a bite to eat before we explored the ship. After all, isn’t that the reason people come on these things? We headed over to Parrot Cay which was just steps from the entrance and didn’t appear to be too busy. We sat down and stuffed our faces with buffet food and realized that we had indeed arrived!

After we ate lunch we began our expedition around the ship. As we walked back past the entrance, we saw a film crew that was taping a Extreme Makeover Home Edition family as they boarded the ship. The had to do a second take because they didn’t look excited enough. Gotta love television. We were informed prior to leaving lunch that our stateroom was ready so we made our way up to the room to put our day bag away. Our room was absolutely amazing! We had a navigator Disney Cruise - Day 01-28veranda which was perfect for Hunter because he could explore the balcony with no real worry of jumping in after a fish. There was a table with a chair and one whole side bench with all these little cool navigational instruments to look at. Supposedly these are the less desirable balconies but we were easily amused! We were also greeted with a giant cheese and fruit plate from Emily’s Mom and Dad, who clearly know their daughter and her love of a good cheese plate. Hunter must be taking after his mommy because he commandeered the entire platter and started calling it “MY FOOD” after eating three scarce bites of his buffet lunch. Hooray for Grandma and PopPop to the rescue!

Jen, Danny and Lily, our friends from Orlando were also on the ship with us so we met up with them and ventured into the ship. I was absolutely amazed at the amount of cool things that existed on the ship. We walked past a full size movie theater as well as a full size Broadway theater. We walked by Flounders Reef which was a nursery for children under 3 to hang out while mom and dad get a break. There was so much more on board but is was just amazing how well thought out this vessel was and the sheer volume of things that existed on board.Disney Cruise - Day 01-61

After our brief exploration we headed back to the room, unpacked our clothes, and got ready for dinner. Our first dinner was at the Animator’s Palate. We were lucky and were paired with the Stevenson family (Jen, Danny and Lily). The restaurant was really cool in that you sit down to a dining room that is in black and white and watch it transform to color throughout your meal. Even the servers’ outfits change to reflect the transition. Emily and Jen decided to start slow and only ordered four appetizers between the two of them. They got a bit of a strange look from the waiter but since they were pros at this cruising thing I went with it. The food was good, not great but not bad.

After dinner Emily, Hunter and I made our way down the red carpet to the Golden Mickeys show. We all loved it, including Hunter who got a kick out of it. The show wrapped up at about 9:30ish and we made our way back to the room. Hunter was beat and the boat was swaying a bit more than I preferred, even with my patch. We got into our pajamas and said our good nights. It was a great first day on the ship. I was still a bit amazed that waking up we would be just outside of Nassau, Bahamas!

Emily’s Birthday Trip ‘09 – Day 8

2/21/09 – Saturday

Breakfast – The Bakery, Disneyland Park
Lunch – In-n-Out Burger, Thousands Palms, CA
Dinner – Casa de Hayes, Scottsdale, AZ

We awoke Saturday and packed up Grandma and Poppop’s things so I could drive them to my least favorite place in the entire world, LAX. It was about a 40 minute drive, but I was headed that way because we were exchanging our rental car for a different one to drive to Arizona (don’t ask). I bid adieu to the Grandparents Griffin, got my new wheels and headed back to Disneyland. I think this was a well thought out strategy because seeing that we had a five hour drive ahead of us, I think Hunter appreciated not having to tack on another 1.5 hours back and forth from LAX.

I returned to the hotel ,and Emily and I decided we should continue our tradition of having baked goods at the Disneyland Park on our last morning before we depart. Hunter also enjoyed this tradition because it meant chocolately goodness was to be had. Hunter ended up having a cookie that was bigger than his head. We finished our treats, took some photos of course, and took the train one last time around the park.

Since we needed to go back to our hotel, we decided to get off again at the Tomorrowland train station and take the “fancy monorail” one last time. Lucky for us there were not many people on the platform so we were able to ride in the front car of the monorail. If you ever get a chance to do this it is way cool. We took the scenic ride back to Downtown Disney and said our goodbyes to all of our favorite things along the way.

After we returned we packed up our remaining items (Emily did an amazing job packing our things while I was in transit) stuffed it all in our smaller car and hit the road. Our destination was my parents’ house in Scottsdale, AZ. The drive was about 6 hours but lucky for us it was the scenic desert. *blank stare* We planned to have lunch a couple hours into our drive at In-n-Out Burger because it had been a week since our last fix. Again, lucky for us that we stopped at the busiest In-n-Out on the planet (or so it felt). We arrived, waited 10 minutes to order, and got our number, 78. They were calling order 42 at the time. Sweet! After I read Harry Potter cover to cover they called our number, and we were on our way. Just to emphasize how busy this place was, in the time it took me to order and get our food, Emily drove five minutes down the road to McDonald’s, got Hunter a Happy Meal, drove back, arranged him with it in the backseat, and still had five minutes to spare before I emerged. I was delighted when she told me our next stop was Starbucks.

The rest of the drive was riveting as well. We saw a few mountains, and oh yeah, cactus’ too. All we needed was an abandoned saloon and we would have been all set. Actually, we would have welcomed something that wasn’t flat. We made our way down the holiday road and somehow ended up in Scottsdale although it didn’t feel like we actually moved.

My Dad was kind enough to meet us at the rental car location and was allowed to pull into the return car area because the attendant knew if he didn’t we would have only needed to make a dozen trips to get all of our bags to where they needed to be. We got our stuff moved over and headed to the casa de Hayes where we were greeted by Grandma Jean and enjoyed a delicious home cooked meal. After dinner, we celebrated both Emily and my Mom’s birthdays, as my Mom’s happened to be that day. She liked her gifts and Emily was treated to THIRTY gifts selected and wrapped by my mom. She really got a kick out of that… if you know Emily, you know how she feels about presents. After exchanging gifts and some stories, we hit the hay.

Emily’s Birthday Trip ‘09 – Day 7

 2/20/09 – Friday

Breakfast – Steakhouse 55, Disneyland Hotel
Lunch – Coke Corner, Disneyland Park
Dinner – Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen (Emily & Patrick), Downtown Disney

Friday morning we woke up to tears in our kettle corn because it was our last full day at Disneyland. Grandma and Poppop, bless their hearts, offered to watch Hunter and let Emily and I enjoy a last quiet breakfast at Steakhouse 55. Since our experience there was so great on Sunday our mouths were watering to enjoy the breakfast once again. We ended up both ordering the same meal as before but the best part of the experience was our quirky server Karen. She was just a riot and she entertained us with her witty banter. She was kind enough to pose for a picture with me which you can see below. She even gave us some free danishes “in case you get fired and have to get food stamps.”

After breakfast Emily and I decided to go explore because we had seen a Disney “Celebrate” sign somewhere on the road during our travels, and she HAD to have a picture of it. The story will be told differently from Emily’s point of view, but I knew exactly where this sign was, it was just down the road. Ok, so maybe my memory isn’t as good as it used to be, but it just must be a little further down the road. Two miles later Emily decided listening to me probably wasn’t in her best interest anymore. We ended up arriving at the Anaheim Garden Walk (which we passed in the car the night before and decided was WAYYYYYYYYYYY to far to walk to), so we decided to walk through it and start the journey back to Disneyland. Lucky for me we ended up finding the sign we were looking for (although I had no idea it would be where it was) and took some fun pictures. All of this for a page in the Shutterfly book! It was a fun adventure, so I would do it again in a heartbeat!

After we returned to the hotel Grandma called the police and told them to call off the search parties, as we had returned safely. Since we had not fully explored Disney’s California Adventure, and it will never look like it does today again after they refurbish it, we decided to enjoy the park. We rode Monsters, Inc. and walked around the park taking goofy (not the character) photos and having a great time. We split up for lunch and ended up both eating hot dogs in different parks. Sounds like something that I planned!

After lunch we returned to Disney’s California Adventure to complete the park tour. Emily, Hunter, and I split off again for a bit so that Emily and Hunter could ride one of Emily’s favorites, the Golden Zephyr attraction, which they both enjoyed immensely. The highlight of Hunter’s trip however was discovered while on this attraction. They are currently doing construction on the lake in the back of the park. Construction of course means, you guessed it, diggers and bulldozers! Hunter could not take his eyes off these amazing vehicles. We spent a good 20 minutes after the ride pointing out and identifying the different machines.

As the sun was setting we realized we had not yet spent a night at the Disneyland Park to see the beauty of the lights. Tonight we did, and enjoyed it very much. Emily was picture happy which was great because we ended up with some beautiful photographs which you can see below. Our only disappointment was that we saved riding Small World until the end and the line was an hour long. Maybe next time! Everyone had a blast as we made our way to the front of the park to head back to the hotel room. We of course had to stop on the way back to stock up on kettle corn for the rest of our travels. (We knew PopPa Don would love it as much as we did!)

Since we hadn’t eaten yet Emily and I stopped and got some Creole food to fill the stomach void. For some reason Grandma and Poppop don’t need to eat as much as Emily and I. For those of you who know us that should come as no surprise. Drew and Fran still make fun of us for stopping once to get McDonalds French fries on our way to dinner. What can we say, we love food.

We ended up back in the room and quickly ate our dinner so we could all lay in bed and watch the video that we had taken of our trip. We had a great time at Disneyland and could not have been in better company. We love this place!

Emily’s Birthday Trip ‘09 – Day 6

 2/19/09 Thursday

Breakfast – River Belle Terrace, Disneyland Park
Lunch – Cucina Cucamonga, Disney’s California Adventure
Dinner – Hook’s Pointe, Disneyland Hotel

The day began with – you guessed it – kettle corn and Toy Story in bed. It is amazing the number of times he has watched this movie and is still riveted each and every time. Today was Grandma’s birthday and Emily had arranged a tour for her and Emily’s dad around Disneyland called the “Walk in Walt’s Footsteps Tour” which was scheduled for the entire morning. We did this tour on our honeymoon and it was a really great overview of the park from Walt’s eyes. With our morning free, Emily, Hunter ,and I decided we would hit the ground running and see as much of the Disneyland Park as we had time for.

It happened to be early magic hour where resort guests get to play in the park an hour before the day guests get to enter, which was a perfect opportunity to see some of the park without so many guests. Or so we thought. When we entered the park it was only Fantasyland and Tomorrowland that were open for the first hour so we strategized what we would see and headed to the “tiny train” as we would come to call it. It turned out that the train wasn’t really open at 8:00 but maybe soon after?? So we headed to Pinocchio’s Daring Journey which sounded just perfect for a two year old, right? OK, so we weren’t thinking too clearly at 8:15, but we went on anyway. Hunter actually handled the scary story and darkness pretty well, but when we got off he said “me no like that one” so we continued on where there was sunlight for awhile.

After our daring journey we headed back to the “tiny train” which now was open at 8:30. I know I work for the company, but I have to say there were many things that puzzled/annoyed me on this trip. The fact that not all of the attractions were not open during the full gamut of parks hours at Disneyland Park got my goat a bit. But I digress… We boarded the train and took a tour of the storybook villages which was a pretty neat ride that Hunter really enjoyed.

After we completed the journey around the tiny village we were feeling the rumbling of our tummies so we headed back to Frontierland to indulge in some breakfast at the little known River Belle Terrace. It was a beautiful morning as we took our breakfast platters and Mickey pancake outside and enjoyed the picturesque backdrop of Tom Sawyer Island. The food hit the spot and we devoured it and headed on to our next stop.

Hunter was feeling the need to explore the world by foot this morning so we let him run laps around Frontierland trying to coax him in the general direction that we were headed. We ended up back at The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh attraction, and we decided to go for a spin in a hunny pot. Hunter enjoyed bouncing up and down like Tigger and excitedly pointed out all of his Disney Channel friends. Post hunny pot, we conveniently exited right near – guess what – the train station!

Since this was Hunter’s special day we decided to ride the train and get off at the Tomorrowland stop to take the “MONORAIL!!!!“ back to Downtown Disney and make our way back to the hotel. This we did and Hunter loved every minute of it.

After the monorail, Hunter had his nap and Grandma and Poppop returned from the tour offering to watch Hunter. They weren’t even done with their offer, and Emily and I were out the door and headed into Disney’s California Adventure to grab a quiet bite to eat. We grabbed some “not so quick” service food from Cucina Cucamonga which is a Mexican restaurant. The food was good, and it was a nice break in the fast paced world of Hunter.

We returned to the room, got the rest of the gang, and headed to Disneyland Park to enjoy our second to last day in California. We took a bunch of pictures as we roamed around taking in all the sights and sounds. It was crowded so we didn’t explore many rides. After our feet were tired we headed back to the room to get ready for dinner. We were greeted by wine and a cheese plate that the Glen Griffin family arranged for Grandma’s birthday. Lucky for all of us she likes to share!

Dinner was at Hook’s Pointe restaurant at the Disneyland Hotel which was by far the fanciest meal we arranged for the family all week that included Hunter. We broke down and decided to bring the portable DVD player to dinner because Hunter was short on sleep and patience. Lucky for us it worked like a charm. We all enjoyed dinner and Poppop, Hunter and I left dinner early so Emily and Grandma could enjoy wine and dessert.

What a great day!

Emily’s Birthday Trip ‘09 – Day 5

2/18/09 Wednesday

Breakfast – Snacks in the park
Lunch – Blue Bayou Café, Disneyland Park
Dinner – ESPN Zone, Downtown Disney

It wouldn’t be a morning at Disneyland without our breakfast of kettle corn and watching Toy Story. Yep, I think we have settled into a pretty comfortable morning pattern. After we completed the morning formalities it was time to start the day. Today was the first really nice weather day we had since we arrived so we were going to make the best of it. We decided since Disneyland opened at 9:00 we wanted to get into the park to see the park opening, and that we did. Unfortunately there wasn’t much in the way of festivities to open the park, but we were there anyway.

We decided we would start our park visit with a ride on the Autopia which was a go-cart type attraction that had been around since the park opened back in 1955. Emily and Hunter navigated the track together while I was driving in front of them trying desperately to capture their ride on the camcorder. I got a lot of footage of the pavement. Grandma and Poppop took up the rear as we “raced” around the track. Hunter wasn’t sure what to make of it, but we think he had fun.

After our drive we walked around the park taking photos and absorbing the details of the park. Emily had received a Q bear (like Flat Stanley, Bermuda style) from our Niece Taylor so she took this opportunity to think of the wild and crazy places that Q bear could visit at the park. Q Bear got up to some mischief and we think Taylor will be excited to see his adventures. Also, it wouldn’t have been a trip to the park without our daily ride around the park on the train. We boarded the train at the Main Street Station and took it all the way around the park and ended at the Frontiereland Station.

After we had our fill of exploring it was time for our 11:50 reservation at the much anticipated Blue Bayou Café in New Orleans Square. This was a restaurant where Emily and I ate on our Honeymoon and Anniversary trips to DLR, and we were looking forward to sinking our teeth into the original Monte Cristo sandwich. The whole table enjoyed the sandwich as we took in the sights and sounds of the first section of the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, where the restaurant resides.

After we stuffed our bellies we decided that we would take a trip to drive up the Pacific Coast Highway and see the ocean as long as we were out this far west. The coast was only about a 20 minute drive from Anaheim which provided a perfect opportunity for our little buddy to get some shut-eye. The quiet was quite nice. It was an interesting drive as the view out the left window, the ocean, was beautiful, but the view out the right side of the car was all about oil drilling and refining equipment which was pretty ugly.

We drove up the coast almost to Long Beach as we looked out the window at the amazing quantity of boats at the harbor. We got a chance to see the Queen Mary out of the window as we turned the car around to head back South. Hunter slept for a good 1.5 hours as we toured. When he awoke we found a good beach to park and stretch our legs. Grandma was so excited to be at the beach that she kicked off her shoes and ran in the frigid water. Being that Grandma and I are Pisces it was a good opportunity for us to get grounded. We took some fun photos and video, got in the car and headed back to the hotel.

We felt a nice informal dinner was in order so we headed to the ESPN Zone to get our fill of buffalo chicken. It was also the perfect place to bring a screaming kid (which Hunter was quickly becoming) because you could barely hear yourself think inside. We had a very enjoyable dinner as we reminisced about the day and our favorite parts of the trip so far. As we licked our fingers clean of the buffalo sauce it was time to call it a night. Hunter and I headed back to the room to get ready for bed as the rest of the party went to the book store and a few more stops throughout Downtown Disney.

Emily’s Birthday Trip ‘09 – Day 4

2/17/09 Tuesday

Breakfast – La Brea Bakery Café (Emily & Patrick), Downtown Disney
Lunch – The Disney Soda Fountain and Studio Store, Hollywood, CA
Dinner – Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen (Emily & Patrick), Downtown Disney

Although the rain was forecast to move out last night or early Tuesday morning, we awoke to another overcast sky and rain coupled with a chill in the air. On tap for this morning the group was going to go to the Anaheim Angels stadium for a tour that Emily had set up prior to our arrival. Prior to the tour, Emily and I headed to grab a quick bite to eat at the Downtown Disney La Brea Bakery Café. We stuffed our faces with breakfast goodness and headed back to the hotel.

Upon our arrival it seemed that Hunter was having his own ideas about what he wanted to do and wasn’t going anywhere except for his crib. Grandma and Emily decided to forgo the stadium tour and to stay back in the room with Hunter, and if he just happened to wake up before we got back, they just might find some time for shopping.

With the revised plan in tow, Colonel and I grabbed our rain gear (did I mention Albert Hammond is full of crap?) and headed out to the ball park. The rain was coming down harder than it had the previous day but we die hard baseball fans wanted to see the stadium. We arrived at the stadium with two minutes to spare before the tour and filed into line just in time to start the tour. The tour was informative and enjoyable as it is always neat to see the inside of a big league stadium. We took some photos, got a couple souvenirs and decided we had enough of the Angel’s stadium.

When we arrived back at the hotel we picked up Hunter, Emily and Grandma and set out on our big excursion to Hollywood and Burbank, CA. Emily had researched the Disney Soda Fountain and Studio Store that was situated on Hollywood Blvd. that she thought would be perfect for lunch. We set the GPS and were on our way. It was about a 45 minute drive, and we saw the Los Angeles skyline and the 2.5 million cars that lined our way to Hollywood.

We arrived at our destination, and as we pulled up to Hollywood Blvd, we noticed that the street was blocked off as they were setting up for the Oscars which would take place on Sunday. We strategically navigated around until we found a cheap little parking garage that only wanted 10 bucks to park our car. What nice people looking to save us some money! We parked the car and headed onto the beautiful street that was Hollywood Blvd??? I must say I now agree with the song “Hollywood is not America!” We did get the opportunity to meet King Kong, Captain Jack Sparrow, Spiderman (who happens to smoke, BTW) and a whole other cast of characters all posing for pictures out of the kindness of their hearts and wallets. We quickly dodged these scary folks as we navigated our way to the Disney Soda Fountain.

We arrived at the restaurant which sounded much more quaint in the write-ups we read, but it was an enjoyable experience. The restaurant was right across the street from the Kodak Theater which hosts the Oscars and the American Idol finals. (Wonder if Kodak or American Idol will be around when we reread this years from now?) We ate our lunch, did some shopping of course and made our way back to the car to take the “Emily and Grandma’s Scenic Hollywood Tour.”

We were trying to kill some time before Emily and Grandma’s Warner Brothers Backlot Tour, so we took a spin around Hollywood. We saw some interesting sights (as seen in US Weekly and People, according to the ladies) as we made our way to Rodeo Drive. Believe it or not there was no Ross Dress for Less on Rodeo Drive, so we had to turn around. We drove down a few commercial and residential streets looking for Brandon Walsh or the Peach Pit. Unfortunately, we didn’t find either but Hunter got really excited when he spotted the “Brown Truck” (The UPS truck).

It was getting to be close to 3:00 so we made our way to the Warner Brothers Studios. We dropped off Grandma and Emily and Poppop, and Hunter, and I made our way to the Los Angeles Zoo. On the way to the zoo we spotted a small train ride that was off the side of the road in Griffith Park. We paid our $7 admission and took a spin around the poorly landscaped train route. There was a bit of a chill in the air, but we enjoyed the ride as we had the entire train to ourselves.

After the train pulled back into the station it was time to complete the rest of the journey to the LA Zoo. When we arrived we had about 1 hour and 30 minutes until the park closed, so we hit the ground running. We saw a number a really cool animals and, because of the weather, had the park pretty much to ourselves. Hunter did not care much about the animals, but he did love to run around the park with reckless abandon. We saw as much as well could and headed out to pick up our lovely birthday girls and head back to Disneyland.

It was an enjoyable 90 minute ride back to the resort with 5 million of my closest friends on the quiet freeway. Needless to say I was happy to be back at the hotel. Grandma and Poppop got room service and we got take-out from Ralph Brennan’s Jazz Kitchen. We watched videos from the day and called it an early night.

Emily’s Birthday Trip ‘09 – Day 3

2/16/09 Monday

Breakfast – White Water Snacks, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel
Lunch – Rancho del Zocale (Emily, Patrick & Hunter), Disneyland Park
Dinner – Storytellers, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel

We awoke to the sound of rain outside on the third day of our California stay. According to the forecast it was due to rain the better part of the day. On top of the rain there was also quite a chill in the air making it not too conducive to outdoor activities. Because we got to sleep in until 5:30 we were a bit more well rested than the previous day. We enjoyed our kettle corn and watched our videos from the previous day (seeing a pattern here?).

After all of us got showered and ready we decided to head down to the White Water Snacks, which was the hotel quick service restaurant, and get a bite to eat. We pondered our three breakfast choices and quickly made our decisions. After devouring our food and enjoying the Hunter gun show (see image) it ended up being nap time for our pal Hunter. We put him down and Grandma and Poppop were kind enough to hang out in the room while we hit the Downtown Disney scene for some retail therapy. Lucky for us we were able to dodge many of the raindrops and stay relatively dry.

We returned to the room with a few items we purchased and relaxed for a bit. Grandma and Poppop had signed up for the Grand Californian tour of the hotel which was scheduled for 1:00. Emily and I decided we don’t often get to Disneyland so we were going to brave the elements and go into the park for some lunch and fun. We packed up what little rain gear we brought (Albert Hammond is full of crap) and headed to the park.

It was getting to be lunch time and we had our sights set on the Rancho del Zocale. It was a delicious Mexican restaurant that was nestled in Frontierland. Unfortunately for us, it was all outdoor seating and we happened to pick the exact table that was perfectly situated in a wind tunnel that was blowing the cold rain on us during our meal. We didn’t mind because the meal was delicious. Hunter ate his chicken and rice like it was going out of style. He also enjoyed Sprite from his $8 Toy Story drink cup… only at Disneyland! Nonetheless, we would definitely recommend the restaurant to those visiting.

After lunch the rain seemed to let up a bit so we decided to partake in one of Hunter’s favorite pastimes, riding the “chugga train!” We boarded in Frontierland and made our way around the park to the Main Street Station. Hunter cheerfully proclaimed “all aboard” before we departed every stop and also made friends with our resident conductor.

After exiting the train we took in the sights and sounds of Town Square and watched the band perform as Mickey and Minnie danced with their friends. Hunter ate it up. On the way back to the hotel we decided to travel through DCA to take the short cut since there is a park entrance to DCA just below our room. On our way through the dampened park we spotted “kachow and Tow No No” (Lightning McQueen and Towmater from Cars), two of Hunter’s favorite characters (although he does not like their movie, BTW). We had to stop and get a photo because there was no one in sight. Hunter tentatively approached the dynamic duo and plopped two big kisses on them (as he is prone to do with every character interaction).

We wrapped up with our Cars friends and headed back to put Hunter down for a snooze. Hunter quickly fell into his afternoon slumber and Grandma kindly offered to stay behind and chaperone his sleep while Colonel (PopPop), Emily and I headed into DCA. Colonel and Emily were fired up to go on a thrill ride and California Screamin’ was calling their names. We headed straight back to the entrance and they waited their 15 minutes to ride. I positioned myself with the video camera to capture evidence of their voyage. Their faces upon takeoff were priceless.

We traveled the park a bit more and stumbled upon this amazing a capella singing group (one of my favorite things in life) singing in front of the animation building. We watched the entire set and cheered along. It was a really cool experience. After the group completed their set we headed back to the room to pick up Hunter and Grandma for dinner.

Grandma loved her dining experience the first night at Storytellers Café so we decided to return again to eat that which we hadn’t eaten the first night. And eat we did. Lucky for us we got a table where Hunter could sit in his high chair, and that made all of the difference. A great dining experience and end to our third day at Disneyland.

Emily’s Birthday Trip ‘09 – Day 2

2/15/09 Sunday – (Emily’s Birthday)

Breakfast – Steakhouse 55, Disneyland Hotel
Dinner – Naples Pizzeria, Downtown Disney

As anticipated day two started much earlier than anyone in the room hoped that it might have. Hunter, our friendly little rooster, decided he needed to perform his morning call at 3:45 a.m. Being that it was 6:45 in his body, we could hardly blame him. We got him out of bed, and we all snuggled in our bed together and watched our go-to Disney bedtime stories channel on tv. Hunter would come to rely on this channel for much of his relaxing time.

We had purchased a bag of delicious kettle corn at Downtown Disney the night before, so we all enjoyed that as our morning breakfast prelude. Hunter and Mom could not get enough of this stuff, and we ate half of the large bag. We finished our nutritious breakfast, watched Toy Story (twice) and decided it was time to embrace the day. It was, of course, Emily’s birthday so we had our dining planned out well in advance. The first stop on the Emily b-day express was breakfast at one of our favorite spots at DLR, Steakhouse 55. The restaurant is a really great place to dine for any meal, but they have really amazing breakfast. The restaurant is filled with photos of old celebrities in black and white and really takes you back in time as you dine. Emily enjoyed the Eggs Benedict (for the first time ever) and I had the old standby Breakfast Burrito which was delish! We all raved about our great selections and cleaned our plates as if we hadn’t eaten in weeks.

After breakfast we explored the Disneyland Hotel (where Steakhouse 55 resides). We walked around the grounds and took at lot of fun photos. Emily and Grandma also enjoyed the shopping opportunity which just so happened to be everywhere around us! It was a bit of a chilly morning so after we finished exploring we thought it would be a good idea to warm our bones and put Hunter down for a nap (since he had been awake for a good 7 hours at this point).

After everyone was rested we headed back into Disneyland Park for a small surprise that was set up by some coworkers at the resort. We got a chance to ride on the private train car, the Lilly Belle, which Walt himself, as well as many other celebrities, have ridden before. It was a really neat experience as we traveled around the park on the tracks imagining what it must have been like to take this same trip back in the days of Walt. Because Emily and I have spent most of our adult lives working for the Mouse, Walt has become a sort of icon that we’ve come to respect through the stories of those who knew and spoke of him.

After our trip around the park on the train, we decided to take in some more by foot. We same many characters in the Town Square show and made our way back to Tomorrowland to take the Monorail trip back to the Downtown Disney Hub at the request of Conductor Hunter.

After we disembarked the Monorail it was time to explore Disney’s California Adventure, the second of two parks at the Disneyland Resort. Since Grandma and Poppop had not been to DCA before it was fun watching them take in all the sights and sounds. The park is themed to life in California and had old time Beach Boys music piping through the park. We explored most of the park and went on the amazing caterpillar train ride (estimated ride time 30 seconds, estimated wait time 15 minutes). It was riveting.

At this point it was getting time for dinner. We had originally planned to dine at Napa Rose for Emily’s 30th birthday, but based on our rock climbing adventures during the previous dinner, Emily was having second thoughts about strapping on Hunter’s helmet and going at it again. Emily decided that we should change plans and enjoy some pizza for dinner which we were happy to oblige. We partook in the early bird special and made our reservations for 4:45. Surprisingly enough we had the whole place to ourselves for the first 30 minutes. We enjoyed some delicious pizza, great stories, and some relaxing drinks.

We finished up dinner and headed back to the room to get into our pajamas (Emily and Grandma had their special birthday pajamas that they got each other for their birthdays). We all got cozy and watched the video that we shot earlier today and ordered an assortment of desserts to complete the day. Emily got a Birthday Cupcake (not sure how chocolate mousse got mistaken for a cupcake, only in CA). We also got a chocolate brownie and apple cobbler which didn‘t have a chance between the three of us.

We licked the plates clean and said goodnight to a wonderful day two in California. Happy 30th Birthday, Emily!
