Mendocino to San Francisco, Visit Fort Ross State Historic Park

We awoke early again today as we have not acclimated to the change in time zones. We had another wonderful breakfast and had to bid adieu to the Brewery Gulch Inn. We started on our journey to San Francisco going south on Route 1 from Mendocino. For those of you who have not traveled on Route 1, let me tell you that I would compare it to a roller coaster (which I refuse to ride). There are times when your car is a foot from tumbling down a 100 foot cliff into the ocean. The drive was well worth the danger because of the breathtaking views. We tried to capture them in the pictures, but even those can’t do the view justice.

On the journey we were told of Fort Ross State Historic Park, an old fort from the 1800’s that was built by some Russian traders. We stopped and took the tour, which ended up being a very neat experience. After taking the self guided tour we continued on to city by the bay (not Green Bay). What would a car ride in California be without a stop at Jack in the Box! That’s right for those of you following along this would be the second (and probably not the last) stop for the healthy goodness that is JITB! And for those of you who remember the digital photo card reader debacle, we found the trusty blue and yellow off highway 101 and purchased one there, gotta love Best Buy!

After our purchase we hit the road with the Golden Gate bridge in our sights! We traveled into the beautiful city and made our way to Union Square where our hotel was located. We were greeted by some friendly protestors who were on strike at the Westin St. Francis where we were staying. The hotel was still operating luckily but with limited services due to the work stoppage. After checking in we decided to walk down Powell St. and try to find some dinner. We ended up eating at Uncle Vito’s Pizza, delicious! After Vito’s we headed back to the room to get our mandatory 10 hours of sleep!  If you have visited the Fort Ross State Historic Park, or traveled to San Francisco, leave a comment below and share your story with us.
