Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort Day Six – Coastal Discovery Museum

Having had our fill of Resort breakfast for a bit, I got our day started by heading down the street to pick up some delicious bagel sandwiches from the Island Bagel Co.  This has also become a sort of Hilton Head tradition. The Island Bagel Co. is one of the few places we have been able to find an Everything Bagel sandwich with Taylor (Jersey) Ham, which we were first introduced to by our good friends Jon and Kim on our New Jersey road trip. Don’t get me wrong, these sandwiches don’t even compare to the original, but it is the best we can get down in the south.

Discovery Costal Museum - Hilton Head Island

After breakfast we got dressed and headed out to the Coastal Discovery Museum, situated on the Eastern end of Hilton Head Island.  Due to Hurricane Matthew that came through Eastern FL in late summer 2016 and ended up making landfall in HHI, there was still residual damage that could be seen in and around the grounds of the museum.  Because of this damage the entrance to the Museum had to be rerouted from the main road.  Making our way through the alternate route we spotted a significant number of constructions vehicles that were being stored on the property so it wasn’t quite the same experience as it would normally be.

We parked the car near the main museum building and decided to make a go of it.  We checked in at the desk and explored the welcome center.  From there, there was a self-guided walking tour around the grounds that included a couple washed up pieces of a space shuttle.  It felt like you were taking a tour through someone’s disorganized back yard with random plants throughout and not a lot of organization.  The museum also included an incredible collection of rare plants and flowers that provided for some fun photo opportunities.  After the boys had their fill of boring plants and flowers we agreed that it was time for some lunch.

Jump and Phils - Hilton Head Island

We didn’t have a set destination, so we ended up driving a bit and finally settled on Jump & Phil’s.  Emily found this place and it proclaims to be the “Cheers” of HHI and also is the Green Bay Packers headquarters for all of the island goers.  Before you add this place to your must-do’s list, let me say that it was your average pub fare.  We did get to eat under a giant moose head with Christmas lights on it, so there was a plus side (for Emily anyway).

DIsney's Hilton Head Island Resort

Since it was a relatively chilly day, we were ready to head back to the room to relax and warm up.  When we arrived our room was being cleaned so we decided to play some games in Big Murggie’s Den.  For those of you who haven’t been to Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort, Murggie’s Den is a cozy game room situated just off the front desk area.  It includes a pool table, tv, board games and more.  It definitely has the feel of a cozy lodge when you enter.  There was also a ping pong table and corn hole game just outside of Muggie’s Den.   We tried our hand at all three of these games and had varying success but lots of fun!

We timed our activity just right as our room was cleaned upon our return.  We kicked off our shoes and relaxed a bit after our afternoon on our feet.  We often find the our stints of relaxation don’t last very long, as we decided to head back out to explore the resort grounds while we still had some sunlight left.  We started by getting drinks in our refillable mugs and checking out the complimentary movie selection in the resort gift shop.  Since we have entered the world of super hero movies, we selected the Avengers movie to watch in the room later that evening.  After leaving the gift shop we played bocce ball, did some crazy hammock swinging, and followed all of that up with some basketball and horseshoes.  You could say that we really did make the most of our day and we were ready to retire to the room for some dinner.

Holy Tequila - Hilton Head Island

We heated up the leftover pizza for the boys and I headed out to pick up some Mexican food at Holy Tequila.  Emily was craving the Queso Fundido so I got us some of that along with some carne asada tacos.  The boys and I followed up dinner by getting the beds set up in the family room area and watching The Avengers movie.  They are huge fans of Tony Stark and have really enjoyed watching all of the Avenger movies.

Another great day in Hilton Head Island.  Tomorrow is our last full day at Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort so it will most likely be jam packed with activity, but for now… sleep.
