Facts About Television

Facts About Television
By Shawna S. Ruppert

Television trivia is probably so popular now because the days of almost every home having a television are long gone, and now most homes have several. Before the onset of the internet, television was the primary distribution method for both entertainment and information, and it still remains the means by which most people receive both of those things. The television first became available to the general public in different parts of the world in the late nineteen thirties.

In the early days of television, broadcasts and sets only operated in black and white. There were early inventions that were capable of broadcasting in color even before the TV had become a household appliance, however none succeeded. RCA became the first company to make color TV sets widely available. The first color broadcast in North America took place in 1953. The color TV didn’t become the standard in most homes until the sixties however.

The advances in the technology behind television sets have continued to advance. The advent of the flat screen technology began the transition to televisions which could display in higher clarity, but LCD and Plasma screens are now the norm in most homes. The current advancements are in the changing of television broadcasts from an analog to digital format. Additionally, broadcasting in high definition signal is now offered by most major networks, and every satellite and cable provider offers hi-def channels.

Television trivia is often concerning the most popular viewing events. There are many different genres of television, news, sports, reality, dramatic programming and sitcoms, and certain categories consistently attract more viewers than other. The hand down most viewed television broadcast of all time is the first appearance of the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan show. This broadcast, which took place in 1964 when the population of the country was only a fraction of what it is today, attracted over 73 million viewers. The next most watched event was Elvis Presley’s first appearance on that same show, which only attracted 60 million viewers.

After those broadcast there are many other shows which have ranked in the top most viewed broadcasts. The event that is most consistently watched by the most people in the United States is the Super Bowl. Worldwide, this event is not as popular, and on a global scale it is safe to say that matches in the final rounds of the World Cup are viewed by more people than the Super Bowl.

Complete Guide to the Simpsons Seasons With the the History of the Simpsons

Complete Guide to the Simpsons Seasons With the the History of the Simpsons
By Billy Daly

The show was created by Matt Groening, who conceived of the idea for the Simpsons in the lobby of James L. Brooks’s office. He named the characters after his own family members, substituting “Bart” for his own name. The family debuted as shorts on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. In 1989, the shorts were spun off into the series The Simpsons which debuted on December 17, 1989. Since then, the series has aired 441 episodes, 20 seasons and The Simpsons Movie was released in 2007.

The show was controversial from its beginning. Bart always seemed to get into trouble quite a lot butt never got punished for it, this led to parents and politician to perceive Bart as a bad role model for younger people. Numerous state schools banned all aspects to do with Simpsons.. In the October 1990, Barbara Bush called The Simpsons “the dumbest thing [she] had ever seen”. In January 1992, then-current President George H. W. Bush made a speech during his re-election in which he said: “We are going to make American family, a bit more like the Walton’s, and not like the Simpsons. The writers rushed out a reply in the form of a short piece which aired three days later before a rerun of “Stark Raving Dad” in which Bart replied, “Hey, we’re just like the Walton’s. We’re hoping for an end to the Depression, too.”

Much of the cast have been involved in pay disputes with 20th century fox. By 1998, the cast said they were going to strike unless they increased their wages. Fox Company come to a deal and an increase was agreed, it went from $30,000 to $125,000 every simpsons episode. The shows popularity increased and with it, sales of merchandise continued to boost its revenue through syndication and simpsons DVD sales, the main cast stopped appearing for script readings in April 2004. After this they asked for a pay rise to $360,000 per simpsons episode, or $8 million over a 22- simpson episode season. On May 2, 2004, the actors reached an agreement with Fox. There was another dispute in 2008, and the actors’ salary was raised to $400,000 per simpsons episode. At the end of 2007 the writers of The Simpsons went on strike together with the Writers Guild of America. The broadcasting of The Simpsons was not be affected by the strike. Since it takes a long time to produce an episode of an animated show, the simpsons episodes are ready up to a year in advance.

In the simpsons Season 14, production switched from traditional cel animation to digital ink and paint. The first simpsons episode to experiment with digital coloring was “Radioactive Man” in 1995. Animators used digital ink and paint during production of the simpssons Season 12 episode “Tennis the Menace”, but Gracie Films delayed the regular use of digital ink and paint until two seasons later. On July 27, 2007, The Simpsons Movie was released. Attempts to make a film version of the Simpsons failed due to inadequate time due to script length and production crew members. Eventually, producers James L. Brooks, Matt Groening, Al Jean, Mike Scully, and Richard Sakai began development of the film in 2001. Tie-in promotions were made with several companies, including 7-Eleven, which transformed selected stores into Kwik-E-Marts. The film was a huge box office success, and was credited with great reviews.

What Happens in the Final Season of Lost

What Happens in the Final Season of Lost
By Jeff Bank

The ABC show Lost has been a worldwide success and has had fans asking from the very first episode, “what happens in the final season of Lost?” With 5 seasons under their belt the Lost writers are finally going to reveal the series finale they say has been planned from the very beginning. While the writers would like to believe that only a very small and tight group of insiders (which includes Matthew Fox, the actor that plays Jack Shepard) know how the series ends the truth of the matter is that much more information is known about the 6th and final season of Lost than they would like.

As anticipation mounts for the 2010 airing of season 6 the producers are keeping very tight lipped about all of the details, but that has not stopped a significant amount of information from being leaked. There are conspiracy theorists that would have you believe that the Lost final season spoilers that are floating around on the internet are merely fakes. Some people believe that the Lost season 6 spoilers are intentionally planted by the Lost staff to completely throw off even the most avid fans. The idea is that by getting the hardcore fans off their game they will generate even more confusion and surprise about what has already been arguably the most complex television show of all time.

The truth of the matter is that for better or worse Lost final season spoilers have been leaked by a very reliable source from England that has a proven track record of delivering on spoilers for a variety of high profile television shows (including Lost). The big question is not how to find Lost final season spoilers (they are available at the end of this article) but rather if you truly want to watch them and regardless of your answer to that question the second part of the question is “why’?

Once a commitment has been made to see and hear Lost season 6 plot twists or even just to learn widely speculated suspicions confirmed there is no going back. You can not unlearn something. Essentially the question you need to ask yourself is if satisfying your short term curiosity is worth relinquishing a significantly more fulfilling experience that will be had when the plot lines are unfolded in their final format.

Enjoying the show Lost is a multifaceted experience that includes post viewing analysis as well as pre-show speculation and anticipation. To succumb to the desire to collect every morsel of spoiler information available is to deprive your self of the entire Lost experience during what was long ago decided to be the final season.

Without providing any final season spoiler information I can tell you that videos circulating on the internet have at most partial snippets of scripts/storylines that are predominately pieced together with information publicly available regarding shoot locations. While the spoilers supposedly do offer some conclusive information much of the information is still to some degree speculation.

The ultimate decision of whether to watch or not is up to you. The series will debut in January 2010, stop for an intermittent break in February for the Winter Olympics, and then resume the 16 episode season (two hour season premiere and two hour series finale) that will likely conclude in late May.

Jeff has been hooked on Lost since the first episode he saw. He is already planning on following the entire final season on his blog: http://www.Lost-final-season.com which already includes Lost final season spoilers and numerous other insights about what to expect in the final season of Lost.

The History of Star Trek

The History of Star Trek
By Shawna S. Ruppert

Few franchises can claim as much success as Star Trek, and Star Trek trivia will show that the series has had incredible success across television and film. The characters have also been featured in books, comics, and video games. Many of the characters, symbols, and sayings from the series have entered the pop culture jargon, and most people are at least familiar with the series to some degree.

The first appearance of Star Trek is shown by a Star Trek quiz to be the original television show created by Gene Roddenberry which starred William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy as Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock. The series would be gone from television for years before returning in 1987 with Star Trek: the Next Generation, starring Patrick Stewart. The next series was Deep Space Nine, followed by Voyager, and finally, Enterprise. The most successful of all the series was undoubtedly The Next Generation.

There have also been eleven movies made to date. Star Trek trivia shows that the first feature film came out in 1979, and featured the original cast of the first show. The following movies also included those same characters: The Wrath of Khan (1982), The Search for Spock (1984), The Voyage Home (1986) The Final Frontier (1989) and The Undiscovered Country (1991).

The next film, Generations (1994) was unique in that it brought together characters from two separate franchises, although a Star Trek quiz will show that members of the original show had appeared in the Next Generation TV series. The next three movies would also feature the TNG cast, and included: First Contact (1996), Insurrection, (1998) and Nemesis (2002).

The most recent film was released in 2009, and feature a complete reboot of the series. It uses the characters of the original TV series, Kirk, Spock, Sulu, Bones, Scotty, Uhura, and Checkov, played by young up and coming actors such as Zachary Quinto, Chris Pine, and Simon Pegg. However, the movie also found a way to feature a strong cameo by classic Star Trek actor, Leonard Nimoy as the original Mr. Spock.

The new movie brought a great deal of attention back the franchise. There is a sequel to that film already in the works. In addition, there is a new MMORPG in the works, which is set to be released sometime in 2010.

Is How I Met Your Mother Season 5 Disappointing You?

Is How I Met Your Mother Season 5 Disappointing You?
By L. Parra

Season 1 Kids… let me tell you this story!

The beginning of a great sitcom on September 2005. The five main characters were introduced: Ted Mosby, Marshall Eriksen, Lily Aldrin, Barney Stinson and Robin Scherbatsky. We can see a Ted Mosby stealing a blue French horn for Robin (Purple Giraffe), Marshall and Lily trying to do “classy grown up things” and then escaping from them from their third-floor bathroom window (The Sweet Tast of Liberty) and Barney being the Master of disguise! (The Slutty Pumpkin).

Ted and Marshall sword fight for the appartment (The Duel), Lily learns the secret recipe for “The Ericksen family seven-layer salad” (Belly Full of Turkey), Ted wakes up with a pineapple (The Pineapple Incident) and Lily kicks Korean Elvis in the nards! (Nothing Good Happens After 2 AM). How can we forget the office war between a guy named “Clark Butterfield” and Barney/Marshall? (Milk) or Ted performing a rain dance? (Come On)

Season 2… Let’s go to the mall… today!

Where were we? Oh yes, Season 2! Marshall finds a “special” friend to join him for brunch, concerts and musicals (World’s Greatest Couple), Barney gets a cool new name (Swarley), the Slap Bet is introduced and we see the first video of the teenager pop start Robin Sparkles, Let’s Go to the Mall (Slap Bet). We meet Barney’s black gay brother James (Single Stamina), Ted invents the “Sensory Deprivator 5000″ (Monday Night Football), Barney runs for the

New York City Marathon

(Lucky Penny) and Marshall shaves his head minutes before his wedding (Something Borrowed).

Season 3 It’s going to be Legen… wait for it… dary! This season is Legendary!

Robin comes back from Argentina with his new exotic boyfriend “Gael” (Wait for It), Ted and Barney pose as tourists to pick up girls (We’re Not from Here), Ted goes for “The Belt” (Third Wheel), we get to know the crazy / hot scale (How I Met Everyone Else) and presence the birth of a new holiday! (Slapsgiving).

Not enough? Ok… Ted gets a tramp stamp (The Platinum Rule), we get to see Britney Spears hitting on Ted (Ten Sessions), learn about the base of Corporate America (The Chain of Screaming) and see Ted and Barney surviving from 2 different accidents (Miracles)

Season 4 Works 2 out of 3 times!

The gang and Regis Philbin going for “The Best Burger in New York”, 80-year old Barney hitting on 22 year-old girls (Intervention), another new holiday is introduced (Not a Father’s Day), and we get to know a technique that works two out of three times! (The Naked Man). Ted and Barney get an opportunity to run their own bar (Three Days of Snow), they prove they are not too old for that “stuff” (Murtaugh), Barney and Marshall seduce Ted SMS style (The Three Days Rule) and Ted gets an offer to design a murder house (As Fast as She Can)

and finally… Season 5 What happened here?

It was a good start. We all wanted to see Robin and Barney as a couple, and I personally was very excited about this new season. After 4 awesome seasons, I never thought this could happen. Don’t get me wrong: I’m still a huge fan. I wait for every Monday night to watch the new episode, and I enjoy it. Just not as much as I used to.

Nevertheless, there are a couple of episodes that I did enjoy very much: “Bagpipes” and “The Playbook”. That’s 2 out of 9… come on guys, I know you can do better than this!

Reality TV Shows – Let’s Get Real!

Reality TV Shows – Let’s Get Real!
By Grant Gerver

How many reality shows does it take to screw in a light bulb? I have no idea, but I can certainly tell you I am sick to death of them. I realize they’re very inexpensive to make, but my goodness, isn’t your everyday life enough of a reality show to satisfy you? It is for me, and then some. I totally understand how addictive these shows can be, and that’s just fine. But when your spouse can’t get enough of them, then it starts to creep into the viewing habits of the family. After all, we only have one HDTV (poor us!) Check this out: it’s a PARTIAL Reality Show List from realityworld.com (I chopped it down by at least 80%. No, I am not being facetious):

1. The Amazing Race
2. America’s Got Talent
3. American Chopper
4. American Idol
5. The Apprentice
6. Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?
7. The Ashlee Simpson Show
8. The Bachelor
9. The Bachelorette
10. Big Brother
11. The Biggest Loser
12. The Buried Life
13. Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew
14. The Contender
15. Cops
16. The Crocodile Hunter
17. Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders: Making the Team
18. Dancing with the Stars
19. Deal Or No Deal
20. Dog The Bounty Hunter
21. Dog Whisperer
22. Extreme Makeover
23. Extreme Makeover: Home Edition
24. HGTV Design Star

27. Intervention
28. Last Comic Standing
29 Nashville Star
30. The Next Food Network Star The Next Iron Chef

44. Top Chef
45. Top Design
46. Trading Spaces
47. Trading Spouses
48. Who Wants To Marry My Dad?
49. Wife Swap
50. Will Work for Food

How can people watch so many of these? Is it boredom rearing its ugly head? It’s not that I’m above viewing this type of television fare, it’s more like there’s no pleasure in it for my simple mind. I can’t sit still for 5 minutes watching any of this mindless drivel. But, since when did I become the TV programming expert? And, I’m a complete sports-a-holic, so maybe that’s even worse! Is it possible to label sports as reality TV? I say no, simply because average people do not compete in football, basketball, hockey, baseball and soccer on the collegiate and professional levels. Or, maybe that’s just a rationalized cop-out.

Oh, and even though Wheel of Fortune is not on the list, I absolutely have to watch that one. So, if you want to call that reality television, color me guilty as charged.

No matter how I feel, reality shows sell and people watch the heck out of them. So, have at it. There’s enough programming out there to fill everybody’s void regardless of theme. Maybe people connect with their fellow citizens through reality shows. And, the fact that viewers often get to have their say via cell phone texting or online, gives these shows more credibility, though that’s still very debatable. In the end, I surely must have more important things to think and write about. But, I just couldn’t resist the opportunity to comment on this growing TV trend. Now, that’s my reality.

One of the Number One Sci-Fi Television Programs – The X-Files

One of the Number One Sci-Fi Television Programs – The X-Files
By Shawna S. Ruppert

The X-Files was a television show which debuted in 1993, and over the course of its run became one of the largest cult hits in television history. X-Files trivia will always begin by mentioning Chris Carter, who was the creator of the show. Carter is a writer that has had other popular television shows such as Millennium, and film success with X-Files movies. The series starred David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson who are both identified more strongly with the characters they played in this series than any other roles they have played to date. Their characters were known as Fox Mulder (Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Anderson).

An X-Files quiz tells us that the series is all about the existence of extraterrestrial activities and a government investigation into those events. The central theme for a long period of the show, and carried over to the films, was Mulder’s quest to understand what had happened to his sister, whom he believed to have been abducted by aliens. The character of Mulder however would cease to be a main character in the seventh season (Robert Patrick was brought in to play a new partner for agent Scully) although Duchovny would appear in a recurring rather than a leading role.

The popularity of the series made it also a successful property for films, similar to the success enjoyed by fellow sci-fi franchise which began on television, Star Trek. X-Files trivia names the first film as “X-Files: Fight the Future”. This film was inserted in continuity between the fifth and sixth seasons and was released in 1998.

The second film was not released until 2008, which an X-Files quiz will show to be six years after the end of the television series. This film was not as well received as the first. Despite that, Carter has declared that if the demand is there he has interest in producing a third film. The only stumbling block to this would be securing the participation of the stars.

The surrounding mythology and the cult popularity of this show has ensured its popularity years after the show was cancelled. The release of the new movie prompted a release of all the seasons on DVD. Sales of the DVDs were extremely strong which has been indicative of other classic television shows reissued on DVD. Old episodes of X-Files are also available through other means such as through purchase through the iTunes television store.

Some of the Oldest Running Shows on Television – Soap Operas

Some of the Oldest Running Shows on Television – Soap Operas
By Shawna S. Ruppert

There haven’t been many forms of trivia on television which have been as endearingly popular as the Soap Opera. Soap Opera trivia could refer to any number of shows, as the form has been replicated and repeated numerous times as other networks and producers attempt to capitalize on the popularity of the form. Another interesting point of note is that the form of the Soap Opera didn’t actually originate on television, but was first a radio programming format. Typically these programs are known for their romantic story lines, wild character arcs and implausible events, and are generally aimed at a female demographic.

A Soap Opera quiz might quickly point out that many soap operas which are still running are among the oldest running shows on television. The longest running soap was just cancelled in earlier 2009 when “Guiding Light” was finally cancelled. This was a show that had begun as a radio drama then made the transition to television. The original radio program and characters were first introduced in 1937. Behind this show, the longest running soaps are now “As the World Turns” followed by “General Hospital”.

Because soaps run for such a long time, many will know that the same character on a single soap opera might be played by more than one actor during that characters life span. Also, soap opera trivia will show that many characters on these shows will be killed off, only to be resurrected later, sometimes prompting a change of actor.

There are many conventions associated with the filming of Soaps that have come to be regarded as common in the United States, although a soap opera quiz will show that these standards are not the same worldwide. The form originated in the United Kingdom with radio BBC serials, and they often approach the soap in a different way. The primary difference is British Soaps tendency to focus on working class characters. American’s prefer their soaps to show the lives of the rich and powerful.

Soaps are often noted for their low production values. These are often a cause of both budget, and necessity. These shows do have much lower budgets then prime time drama’s do. However, the speed at which the shows must be produced also requires them to take a much different approach to filming than other shows or films would. Actors also have much less time to learn lines or rehearse when working on a soap.

As Seen on TV Fever in a Supposedly Responsible News Market – Part II of II

As Seen on TV Fever in a Supposedly Responsible News Market – Part II of II
By Demba Ndiaye

(Continuation, Part I of II)

My immediate folks argue “but why the TV stations would ever condone such practices?” and I usually throw “because of the unspoken ethic shift in their programming”

TV programs used to be the gateway in the community where they operate, allowing services and businesses to interact and collaborate. Cases of families trapped in strains of modern life that used TV programming to babysitting their toddlers are abundant.

Today whenever these bogus ads are aired, the damage is viral and before you know you have already spent money just gone forever. Today on most venues a Class action lawsuit would fit in mass scams orchestrated with the complicity of major TV networks. Go online and find out any advertised stuff that seems too good to be true and find out how many folks are complaining over their scams under forms of a “bait & switch”.

TV ads would do better stating that “To get started user(s) must pay for the service” as such information is not disclosed upfront until you give up your E-mail and date of birth, age and zip code -feeding them with prime info they will simply use to disclose, with a price tag, your information when someone else is searching for you” it’s no different than those scams where users think they’re being served while, unknowingly, they’re building the very substance purported to work for them…Now you know the trick, you still don’t believe the hype? Try it entering FALSE information so when they think they “gotcha” you’re sure all they have is junk… but wait, same junk will then be served to the next one coming to “use” the service as they will be served with the information you gave up about yourself while pretending to use the service…”GOTCHA”

Knowing the rationale and explaining others is a way to help reduce the drama over who is searching who.

Bottom line: are you suspicious of being Googled?.. Are you aware that trying it to know about who is searching for you, by the same token you are offering yourself to being googled?

The best way to network safe and free is to go at a reduced speed through all those social networking tools around and counting every once a while…
